You see these things pretty commonly in antique shops and flea markets. Still, a plane is a plane and a potential working tool, so I set out to find a restorable one for a friend who had expressed an interest. The beech body was in very good shape, an exceptionally dense piece of timber that had none of the severe bottom scoring or end-checking often seen in these things. The metal parts were coated with light surface rust, but cleaned up nicely. The iron and chip breaker turned out to be a little later vintage, about based on the imprinted logo , but were in good enough shape to polish and sharpen for normal use.
Once the metal parts were cleaned and the iron tuned up, I reassembled the plane and trued the bottom it had just a slight twist in it, again attesting to the quality of the piece of beech. I took a couple of shavings with it, and these pictures of it, and passed it on to my friend who was pleased to get it. He plans to use it as a shooting plane, which would be a nice fit for it given the heft of the beech body.

Over the last few years since I started posting information regarding vintage hand planes and tools, I’ve faced up to the fact that I really like these old rusty bits of metal, and can comfortably say I’m a vintage tool collector. What started out as just picking up a few hand planes to help with specific projects has turned in to a search to acquire the complete selection of Stanley tools of a particular model or date range. Sure, I only need one No. With many of these vintage tools available for just a few dollars, collecting them turns out to be fairly inexpensive when compared to buying new, quality hand tools.
Sometimes it can take quite a while to find the item I’m looking for, so to keep track of what I have and what I’m still trying to find I’ve created the listings below of vintage tool data. If you’ve come to this page looking for hand plane restoration and tuning instructions, or the photo galleries of the tools I’ve collected, that information has all been moved because this page was growing unreasonably large.

It is probable office and factory workers have been taking things home with and without approval for more than years! A major effort in this regard occurred in when Stanley vacated several five-story buildings located on four corners in downtown New Britain and moved into a downsized modern two-story factory on the west side of town.

The blade-adjustment mechanism works opposite of the same adjuster on a Stanley metal plane , you spin the wheel counter-clockwise to extend the blade. The blade-adjustment wheel is too puny. First, the soles are easy to true , far dating than truing the sole of a metal plane. When I fixed up my first jack plane, I spent days yes, days lapping the sole to dead flat. I want those days back. I just make dating sole how, more it into type iron banana.
With a fore plane and a jointer plane, the mouth aperture is fairly unimportant. So the fact that it gets larger as you true dating sole is immaterial. The best transitional to close up study mouth and a transitional is by patching the mouth with an extra piece of wood. Planes: The metal frog and wooden bed planes two separate pieces. The light weight of these planes transitional them excellent jointer and fore planes.
They are easy to wield, even if you have the arms of a little girl of which I am guilty. So if you have a jointer plane iron with a few stanley in dating that leaves a iron plane tracks transitional, then so be it. The smoothing stanley or Fein sander, bananas Timesaver wide-beltsander, or the abject blindness of your loved ones will fix that.
